William H. “Bill” Fifer, age 82, a resident of Portland, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2009, following a brief illness.
Bill was born on May 29, 1927, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Dewitt C. and Corinna (Miller) Fifer. He was a veteran of the United States Marines serving in China. Bill married Helen E. Stover on December 6, 1947. Bill was a 30 year employee of Sheller Globe in Portland retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church of Portland, the American Legion Post #211 of Portland, Moose Lodge of Portland and the VFW in Salamonia. Survivors include: His wife of 61 years: Helen Fifer – Portland, Indiana 1 son: Gary W. Fifer – Muncie, Indiana 1 daughter: Evelyn K. Espy – Huntington, Indiana 1 brother: Cecil Fifer (wife Shirley) – Salem, Oregon 2 sisters: Estella Carballo – Port St. Lucie, Florida Zola Rankin (husband Gary) – Summitville, Indiana 2 grandsons and 5 great grandchildren Several nieces and nephews Funeral services for Bill Fifer will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home. Pastor Wayne Ward will officiate and burial will follow in the Green Park Cemetery in Portland. The American Legion Post #211 of Portland will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 3-7 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed towards the Jay County Cancer Society. 1. 18-11-2009 22:04 Helen, Gary, Evelyn, and family, My thoughts and prayers are with you. Uncle Bill was always a joy to be around and I have many fond memories of him. He will live on in all of our hearts and minds as we keep his memory alive. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral but I am currently in Pennsylvania on business and will not be able to get to Portland.
