Wanita Opal Shirk, 88, of Portland, Indiana passed away on Sunday morning, October 18, 2009 at Persimmon Ridge Nursing Home in Portland, Indiana.
Wanita was born on March 4, 1921 in Blackford County, Indiana the daughter of James W. and Etta C. (Hunt) Philebaum. She Married Peter Brigner on March 15, 1941 and he passed away on December 16, 1963. Wanita worked in the Defense Factory, during World War II, making Nordon Bomb Sights and Automatic Pilots, receiving the Army & Navy award for Excelence in 1943. She took Practical Nurses training at Chicago’s Post Graduate School of Nursing from 1961-1962. She married Clarrel M. Shirk on March 6, 1965 and he passed away on December 22, 2000. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Portland, Indiana and served as the Secretary of the Board from 1972-1991. She also worked for Jay Randolph Developmental Services from 1987-1998. Survivors include 1 Sister: Lena Henson – Mt. Vernon, Ohio, 1 Stepson: Jerry Shirk (wife Sue) – Portland, Indiana, 2 step-grandchildren, 4 step-great grandchildren and Several Nieces &Nephews. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Rines. Funeral services for Wanita Shirk will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the First Church of the Nazarene, Portland, Indiana with Pastor Richard Secor and Dave McClellan officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Ohio. Visitation for Wanita Shirk will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009, from 6-8 p.m. in the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home. There will also be visitation from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed towards the First Church of the Nazarene Memorial Fund.
