Joe Randy Smith

         Joe “Randy” Smith, age 67 a rural Portland resident passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016 at his home.  He was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Portland and a former member of the Bellfountaine United Methodist Church in Jay County.  He was also active with Gideons International visiting inmates in the Jay County Security Center.  He was a 1967 graduate of Portland High School and then studied cooling and refrigeration at Ivy Tech College in Ft. Wayne.  He worked for 17 years at General Electric in Decatur, Indiana and also owned and operated Joe R. Smith TV and Antenna Service in Jay County.  He worked for Heilig Myers Furniture in Portland and retired from Community Care Center Nursing Homes after more than 10 years in environmental services.   He also worked for the Fellowship Baptist Church and the Jay County Christian Academy in environmental services after retirement.

     He was a graduate of the Jay County Leadership Academy and a longtime member of the Portland Lion Club where he served two terms as President of the club.  He was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones award from Lions Club International. He was a Charter member of the Jay County Crime Stoppers program, Twice, he served as President of Community and Family Services Advisory Board where he volunteered in the Thrift Shop and Food Bank for many years. He was also a former member of the local Gold Wing motorcycle organization.

     Joe “Randy” Smith was born December 1, 1948 in Portland, Indiana the son of Joe M. and Mary (Norris) Smith.  He was married to Cathy Jacobs  on July 24, 1971.

His beloved wife- Cathy Smith, rural Portland, Indiana

3 Sons- Jay Dodd, Ridgeway, PA.

              Jamie Smith (wife-Andrea), Auburn, Indiana

              Dr. Derek Smith (wife-Sara), Fishers, Indiana

1 Brother- Mike Irey (wife-Susan), Marion, Indiana

5 Grandchildren

He was preceded in death by a brother, Doug Smith

      Visitation will be held from 3-7pm on Wednesday in the Fellowship Baptist Church,  286 S. 200 W. Portland, Indiana.

      Funeral services will be at 11:00am Thursday at Fellowship Baptist Church with Pastor Hugh Kelly officiating the service.  Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery, southeast of Portland.

Memorials may be directed to the Fellowship Baptist Church or the Bellfountaine United Methodist Church.
