Mary Gene Lingo, age 88 , a resident of Portland, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Swiss Village in Berne.
Gene was born on October 4, 1927, in Wayne Township, Jay County, the daughter of Urban and Lavina (Wagner) Wendel. She graduated from Bryant High School in 1945 and earned a nursing degree from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Joliet, Illinois in 1948. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Jay County Hospital for 45 years, retiring in 1993. Gene was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portland where she taught religious instruction for 17 years every Wednesday evening. She married Sharon Elick on November 26, 1949 and he passed away on January 16, 1991. She later married Bill Lingo on January 27, 1994 and he passed away on May 8, 2006.

1 son: John A. Elick – Portland, Indiana
3 daughters: Connie Flanagan (husband Harold) – Muncie, Indiana
Colette Eggert (husband William) – Columbus, Ohio
Candy Shelton – Portland, Indiana
7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland. A scripture service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Portland. Burial will follow in the Green Park Cemetery in Portland.
