Fredrick R. Franks

May 5, 1931 ~ February 23, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

     Fredrick R. Franks, age 85, a resident of Portland, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Persimmon Ridge in Portland. 

     Fredrick was born on May 5, 1931, in Portland, Indiana, the son of George W. and Beatrice (Miller) Franks.  The youngest of six children, Leona Ruth Lykins, George Franks, Jr., Robert Earl Franks, Charles E. Franks, and Helen J. Neunenscwander.  He was a 1949 graduate of Portland High School. 

     Fredrick enlisted in the U.S. Army, July 14, 1949.  An Infantry Soldier of the 7th Infantry Division who landed in the Invasion of Inchon, Korea in September 1950.  Acquiring two Purple Hearts, The Combat Infantry Badge, Korea Service Medal and a Silver Star.  His division acquired a Presidential Unit Citation with a Cluster and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.  He completed his enlistment in April 1952 with The Old Guard, the Home of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.  He worked for NAAS Foods for 16 years and retired from Coca Cola in Portland in 1994 after 24 years of service. 

     Fredrick was a member of the Portland American Legion Post #211 of Portland, D.A.V. in Portland and the Jay Lodge 87 F. & A.M. in Portland.

     Survivors include:

     2 sons:  Greg A. Franks (wife Cathy) – Portland, Indiana

                   Ryan Franks – Indianapolis, Indiana

     1 daughter:  Renee Bicknell – Sarasota, Florida

     1 brother:  George Franks – Gibson City, Illinois

     4 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren

     Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland. 

            Funeral services will be held on 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home in Portland.  Pastor Gil Alicea will officiate and burial will follow in the Center Cemetery, west of Portland.   The Jay Lodge 87 F.&A.M. will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Portland American Legion Post 211 will be in charge of military rites at the cemetery.
