Luther D. Sockrider, age 89, a resident of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a former Portland resident.
Luther was born on July 4, 1929, in Portland, the son of Russell and Mabel (Cantrell) Sockrider. He graduated from Portland High School in 1947. Luther was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army honorably serving in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Portland Forge after 42 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Portland and was a member of the American Legion Post #211 in Portland and the Eagles Lodge in Portland. He married Reiko Hashimoto on May 28, 1953 and she passed away on July 29, 2018.
Survivors include:
1 daughter: Carolyn Longoria (husband Max) – Indianapolis, Indiana
2 sisters: Alta Slusser – Portland, Indiana
Mary Lu Premer (husband Philip) – Pennville, Indiana
4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren
4 nephews and 6 nieces
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1 – 2 p.m. at the Chapel in Green Park Cemetery. Services will follow at 2 p.m. at the chapel with Pastor Larry Eads officiating. The American Legion Post #211 of Portland will conduct military graveside rites.
