Lloyd Wright

Lloyd E. Wright, age 81, a resident of Portland, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Persimmon Ridge in Portland.

Lloyd was born on March 25, 1945, in Portland, Indiana, the son of Albert and Helen (Snyder) Wright. He graduated from Fort Recovery High School in 1963 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966.

Known by the CB handle “Green Diamond,” Lloyd drove for Diamond Transportation, where he enjoyed seeing the country and telling stories about the open road. Lloyd worked for Meshberger Brothers Stone Quarry in Portland for many years before retiring. He was a member of West Walnut Church of Christ in Portland.

On November 29, 1974, Lloyd married Sharon Prescott, beginning a marriage that would span more than 51 years.

One of Lloyd’s greatest passions was the fire service. In 1966, he joined the Fort Recovery Fire Department. After getting married in 1974, he joined the Salamonia Volunteer Fire Department, where he dedicated many years of service to his community. Throughout his time with the department, Lloyd held several leadership positions, including Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Chief, President, and Vice President.

Lloyd also enjoyed playing water ball for both the Fort Recovery and Salamonia fire departments, earning many first-place trophies over the years. He was instrumental in helping establish the Junior Firefighters Cadet Program in Salamonia and was always willing to lend a hand with department fundraisers, especially the popular chicken and fish fries.

In 2008, Lloyd became the District 8B Chairman for the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, a position he held for many years. In this role, he worked closely with and supported the fire departments throughout his district.

Lloyd’s dedication to the fire service earned him several special honors. At the 2016 Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association Convention, he was recognized for 50 years of service as a firefighter. The following year, in 2017, Lloyd was named Mr. IVFA, the highest honor awarded by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association.

His commitment to serving others extended well beyond the fire department. In 2013, Lloyd was honored by the Cincinnatus League, a local service organization, in recognition of his lifetime of community service. In 2016, he was also selected to serve as a torchbearer for Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration.

Lloyd also gave generously of his time to young people in his community. He coached Little League for many years and continued coaching even after his own son was no longer playing—a reflection of how much he enjoyed helping and encouraging others.

8 grandchildren: Maggie, AJ (wife Hailey), Simon, Gabe, Jakob, Landyn and Lilly

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Helen Wright and a sister Dorothy Miller

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-6 p.m. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Paul VanCise will officiate and burial will follow at Salamonia Cemetery. American Legion Post #211 of Portland will conduct military rites.
