Rev. James T. Durham, 76, of Portland, Indiana, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, at 2:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

Jim was born on June 17, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Archie and Thelma Durham. He spent an important part of his life in Winchester, Indiana, before making his home in Portland, Indiana.

Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, minister, and friend whose greatest joy was the family he loved so dearly. He shared 50 years filled with love and treasured memories with his wife, Phylis “Jean” Durham.

Jim proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard, demonstrating the dedication and commitment that remained a part of his character throughout his life. He also built a long and meaningful career at OMCO Mold in Winchester, Indiana, where he worked until his retirement.

Jim’s faith was a defining part of his life. As a Baptist minister, he devoted much of his time to serving others, with a special passion for nursing home ministry. He found great purpose in visiting residents, sharing his faith, praying with them, offering encouragement, and bringing comfort and companionship to those who needed it.

Jim was a devoted father to his children, Jacob and his wife, Beverly, and Samuel and his wife, Autumn. He was incredibly proud of his family and cherished the relationships he shared with each of them.

His grandchildren held a particularly special place in his heart. He leaves behind Lauren Newland and her husband, Andrew; Alexis; Grace; and Alec. The love Jim shared with them and the memories they created together will remain a treasured part of their lives forever.

He is also survived by his brothers, Jack; Jerry and his wife, Roxanne; and Larry and his wife, Gloria; as well as his sister-in-law, Diane, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gary; and Jack’s wife, Glenda.

Jim also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Suzy, who was a cherished companion and brought him comfort, joy, and unconditional love. Suzy held a very special place in Jim’s heart and was an important part of his life and family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Heart to Heart Hospice and the St. Vincent Cardiology/LVAD Team for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Jim and his family. Their dedication and compassion brought comfort during a difficult time and will always be remembered with sincere appreciation.

Though his passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, his family takes comfort in knowing that his faith, his love, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.

Rest peacefully, Jim. Your work here is finished, your faith has been lived, and your legacy of love and service will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery southeast of Winchester.
