Mitch Sutton, age 57 a resident of Portland, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Albany Healthcare. Mitch was a member and past president of the Portland Lion’s Club, the Jay County 4th of July Committee, and a past board member and President of the Portland Aviation Board. He was a 1984 graduate of Jay County High School. Mitch was a police dispatcher with the Portland Police Department and the Jay County Sheriff’s Office. In 1988 he was hired as a Deputy with the Jay County Sheriff’s Office. During his years at the Sheriff’s Office he was promoted to Investigator, and also Chief Deputy and retired in 2020. He was then appointed as the first officer in charge of Courthouse Security at the Jay County Courthouse. In 2021 he was appointed as Chief of Police for Portland Police Department.
Mitch Sutton was born February 13, 1966 in Portland, Indiana the son of Donald and Toni (DuJardin) Sutton. He was married on July 16, 1988 to Amy Bryant.

Daughter- Molly Studebaker (husband-Preston), Mentone
His mother- Toni Sutton, Portland
Brother- Rocky Sutton (wife-Esther), Valparaiso
Grandchildren- Grayson, Emma, Kate, and Griffin
He was preceded in death by his father, Don, and a brother Jeff.
Visitation will be held from 1:00pm -4:00pm Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland. A memorial service will follow at 4:00pm.
